Tata Power has built a data centre opportunity pipeline of more than 2.8 GW across 18 domestic and global operators, as it looks to tap rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and digital infrastructure.
In a stock exchange filing on Wednesday, the company said its pipeline comprises 430 MW of upcoming load under its distribution network, 1,236 MW of transmission-linked opportunities and 1,150 MW of green energy capacity under active engagement.
The company is pursuing 29 active workstreams spanning renewable energy and transmission and distribution (T&D).
Beyond electricity supply, Tata Power is looking to provide integrated infrastructure for data centres, including grid connectivity, renewable power, energy storage, cooling systems and utility infrastructure.
The expansion comes amid expectations of a sharp increase in electricity demand from AI-led data centres. Citing Central Electricity Authority estimates, the Ministry of Power projects that these facilities could add around 26.3 GW to India’s power demand by FY32, the company said.
Mumbai grid expansion worth ₹15,000 crore
Tata Power is upgrading its 110 kV and 220 kV transmission networks in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to meet the growing power requirements of hyperscale data centres, according to the filing.
The work includes increasing transmission and transformation capacity, adding network redundancy, developing receiving stations and advancing a 400 kV transmission ring network.
These upgrades are part of the company’s ₹15,000-crore Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan, aimed at improving power supply reliability for large digital infrastructure projects.
Tata Power has more than 26 GW of operational and under-construction generation capacity, including about 17.7 GW of clean and green energy capacity. Its transmission and distribution network serves more than 13 million customers across its distribution businesses.
