Tata Power on Tuesday said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Imperial College London to explore collaboration in research and technology across energy storage, grid flexibility, AI and industrial decarbonisation.

The partnership aims to combine Tata Power’s experience in developing and operating energy infrastructure with the UK university’s research capabilities to develop solutions for more flexible, resilient and lower-carbon energy systems, it said in a press statement.

“The next generation of grids, storage and digital energy systems will need to work together to meet a rapidly evolving demand landscape,” noted Praveer Sinha, chief executive officer and managing director of Tata Power.

The collaboration will explore applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in energy, advanced energy systems and digital technologies, with a focus on translating research into practical applications.

It comes amid efforts by India and the UK to deepen cooperation on clean energy under the India-UK Vision 2035, which identifies energy storage, grid transformation, AI and renewable energy as areas for joint work.

“This partnership is a great example of our fantastic new trade deal bringing opportunities to life,” stated Jonathan Reynolds, the UK government’s business and trade secretary.

He added that the partnership could help turn research into cleaner energy solutions while supporting jobs and growth in both countries.
